Look it up before you roll.

Official and neutral tools. None of them replace a phone call to the number on file. They tell you what that call should confirm.

Verification and vetting

  • FMCSA SAFER Company Snapshot

    safer.fmcsa.dot.gov · U.S. DOT / FMCSA · Free

Public lookup of a carrier or broker by MC or USDOT number. Use it to check the legal name, address and phone number.

How to use it. Search by DOT or MC number, then call the phone number shown on that page. FMCSA says top search results for a company can be fake profiles, so confirm numbers here.

  • FMCSA Licensing & Insurance (L&I) search

    li-public.fmcsa.dot.gov · U.S. DOT / FMCSA · Free

Shows operating authority status and insurance, bond and trust filings on record for a carrier or broker.

How to use it. Confirm authority is active for the kind of haul, and that the insurance (carrier) or bond/trust (broker) filing is actually there.

  • SCAC Verified

scac.nmfta.org · NMFTA · Paid subscription (NMFTA page lists $570/year per named user, checked Oct 28, 2026)

NMFTA's identity-verified carrier identification. NMFTA says matching the SCAC to the carrier name helps catch impersonation.

How to use it. Match the carrier code on the paperwork to the carrier name. Check the price on NMFTA’s page before you buy.

  • FMCSA Safety Measurement System (SMS)

    ai.fmcsa.dot.gov · U.S. DOT / FMCSA · Free

Roadside inspection and crash history, where FMCSA has it on file.

How to use it. A blank history on a carrier that claims a big fleet is a reason to slow down, not a reason to relax.

  • Motus (FMCSA registration)

    motus.dot.gov · U.S. DOT / FMCSA · Free

FMCSA's registration system. Go here directly; do not use links from emails.

How to use it. Type the address yourself. Never use a registration link from an email.

Reporting and intelligence

  • FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)

    www.ic3.gov · FBI · Free

File a complaint for cyber-enabled cargo theft and fraud.

How to use it. Include dates, amounts, email addresses, phone numbers and payment details.

  • ReportFraud.ftc.gov

    reportfraud.ftc.gov · Federal Trade Commission · Free

Report scams, including fake agency calls and texts.

How to use it. Use it for fake agency calls, texts and emails as well as payment fraud.

  • National Consumer Complaint Database (NCCDB)

    nccdb.fmcsa.dot.gov · U.S. DOT / FMCSA · Free

FMCSA's complaint intake, named on its fraud guidance page.

How to use it. Use it for a carrier or broker complaint, alongside your police report.

  • CargoNet

    www.cargonet.com · Verisk · Membership; contact them

Cargo theft prevention and recovery network. Theft victims can call 1-888-595-CNET (2638).

How to use it. Call after you have told the police. Its releases give this number for theft victims.

  • NICB

www.nicb.org · National Insurance Crime Bureau · Free to report

Insurance-crime non-profit. If you suspect cargo theft, call local law enforcement, your insurance carrier and NICB at 800-TEL-NICB.

How to use it. Tell your insurer first, then NICB. A report helps spot patterns; it does not replace the police report.
